Social Awareness about Differently Abled in Egypt

Thank you for donating to our initiatives for the “Social Awareness about Differently Abled in Egypt” project. This project reflects the heart of our mission and vision. We believe that by changing the mentality of our community and how they perceive physically challenged people, we will spend less time and effort demanding wheelchair users’ basic human rights; their needs will naturally be considered and respected.

People with physical disabilities have the right to live their lives freely and confidently in public spaces without feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable because of unwanted attention or intrusive stares.

The most appropriate way to interact with a person with a disability is with respect, kindness, and simplicity—just as you would with anyone else. Disability should never be a source of curiosity or a reason to treat someone differently. It is a natural part of human diversity, and every individual deserves to be seen for who they are rather than their disability.

Creating an inclusive society goes beyond providing accessible infrastructure. It also requires fostering a culture of respect, understanding, and equal treatment. By changing the way we interact with one another, we can help ensure that everyone feels welcomed, valued, and included in their communities.

Respectful Ways to Interact with People with Physical Disabilities

• Ask before offering help. Always ask if assistance is needed before stepping in. Respect the person's independence and allow them to decide whether they would like help.
• A wheelchair is an extension of the person's body. A wheelchair is not just a piece of equipment—it is part of the person's personal space. Never lean on, push, or move a wheelchair without permission.
• Communicate at eye level. When speaking with a wheelchair user, try to position yourself at their eye level whenever possible. This creates more comfortable, respectful, and equal communication.
• Match their pace. When walking with a person with a physical disability, move at their pace. Respecting their speed is an important part of respecting the individual.
• Treat people naturally and with respect. Interact with people with physical disabilities just as you would with anyone else. Focus on the person, not the disability.
• Speak directly to the person. Address the person with the disability directly, even if they are accompanied by a family member, friend, or personal assistant. Always include them in the conversation.

Respect is the first and most important step toward true inclusion.
