Rural Schools Lack Safe Water for Students

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have shown support for the Solar Powered Boreholes for 25 Nigerian Schools project. Your interest in improving access to safe water for schoolchildren is greatly appreciated. At this time, however, the donations received remain too limited for the borehole installations to begin.

In many rural schools across Nigeria, students do not have access to clean water within the school grounds. Children often walk long distances to nearby streams or wells during school hours to fetch water. This causes them to miss lessons and exposes them to unsafe water sources that may lead to illness.

Poor water access also affects hygiene and sanitation in schools. Without reliable water for handwashing and toilets, students face a higher risk of infections and other health problems. Girls are especially affected when sanitation facilities lack water, which can make school attendance more difficult during menstruation.

This project plans to install solar powered boreholes in 25 rural schools, providing clean water to more than 10,000 pupils. Each borehole will include a solar pump, water storage tank, and taps where students can collect water for drinking, washing, and sanitation needs.

Solar powered systems are well suited for rural communities because they operate without fuel or electricity costs. Once installed, the systems can provide steady water supply throughout the school day. Local technicians will also be trained to maintain the equipment so that the water systems continue working for many years.

Access to clean water in schools can greatly improve the health and wellbeing of students. Reliable water supply helps reduce water related illnesses, supports better hygiene practices, and allows children to remain focused on their studies.

We are grateful for the encouragement already shown by donors who believe in providing safe water for schoolchildren. With additional support, this project can begin delivering reliable water systems that will serve students and their communities for years to come.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
