We are working in collaboration with the local government of Maipú to conduct an initial cleanup of the Mapocho River. It is the city's main river and extends throughout the metropolitan region. It rises from the mountain range and flows into the Maipo River, which then flows into the Pacific Ocean.
Cleanups in these areas are vitally important because we can prevent much of the plastic pollution that will directly reach the ocean.
We are currently evaluating possible dates for the cleanup based on the weather, as we are entering winter, which complicates the recruitment of volunteers.
We are calling on donors to implement a large-scale project, incentivize volunteers to travel to the beaches to perform cleanups, and also to secure the beach cleaner, which we have been unable to obtain due to lack of funding.
