In the middle of July, just before the summer holidays, music appreciation classes were held at two elementary schools in Soma City. Mr. Okazaki on flute, Mr. Sengoku on clarinet and Ms. Mitsumori on piano played at these classes.
Two years have passed since we started music appreciation classes with these three musicians. This year, they performed more harmoniously than ever, exchanging ideas about playing. Then, the program was very varied and interesting for children, consisting of each recital of the flute and clarinet, solo performance of the piano, duet of these woodwind instruments and performance by all of them.
They visited Yawata Elementary School with about 100 children and Oono Elementary School with approximately 150 ones. Both elementary schools are at small-scale and all the children took part in these classes.
The most popular piece was Adolf Schreiner’s Immer Kleiner (Always smaller). Mr. Sengoku played the clarinet as he disassembled it. Each time he removed a part of the instrument, children exclaimed in surprise.
At the end of these classes, everyone sang each school song. The teachers suggested and prepared the attraction on the days of the classes. Even children who were sleepy at the last part of the class stood to sing cheerfully.
There are nine elementary schools in Soma City. However, we have not held this music appreciation class of woodwind instruments at some schools. We hope to bring this experience there someday.
