Context
On 6th February 2023, two powerful Earthquakes (magnitude 7.8 and 6.8) hit Türkiye (Kahramanmaras), affecting Southern Türkiye and Northern Syria. These earthquakes are the largest to hit Türkiye in the last century, and the most significant to strike the country’s south-east region in hundreds of years. As of 13 March 2023, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced that 48,448 people lost their lives, including 6,660 foreign nationals, primarily from Syria. In addition, at least 4,500 deaths were reported in Syria.
PAH response
PAH emergency team was immediately deployed to Turkey to provide emergency support to the earthquake-affected population in Turkey and Syria. A fundraising campaign (SOS Turkey/Syria) was launched to collect funds for the response.
PAH response included the below components:
- Emergency food distribution (hot meals and ready-to-eat food packages) for more than 50,00 individuals in Turkey and Syria
- Emergency non-food items distribution (blankets, mattresses, dignity kits including basic hygiene items and menstrual items for women) for more than 10,000 individuals in Turkey and Syria
- Provision of dozens of tents for about 250 individuals in Syria
- Set-up of 6 collective centers to provide temporary accommodation for 300 individuals in Syria
Overall, PAH activities benefitted 65,223 individuals (42,062 in Syria and 23,161 in Turkey; as of 21 April 2023). Activities have been implemented directed by PAH and through its local partners (International Humanitarian Relief and Orange organization).
