From Underestimated to High Achieving

Taking a chance on adopting a vulnerable horse results in a champion

Mikenna Hallock wasn’t looking for a new horse – she just enjoyed volunteering for Sound Equine Options. In the two years since earning her BS in Equine Sciences from Oregon State University, Mikenna restarted several Saddlebreds in SEO’s Training Challenges to great success. And besides, Mikenna had already found her heart horse, a cheeky gelding warmblood named Cisco she’d had since she was 14.

When she met Sally Cat, a nine-year-old mare rescued by SEO, Mikenna saw she needed a lot of help. The disheveled warmblood was potbellied and under-muscled. But in that mare, Mikenna caught a glimpse of fierce determination. She saw a longing not only to live but to do so with purpose.

“I didn’t want to love her,” says Mikenna today, just under two years since adopting the mare she renamed Kitty. “I had Cisco. I didn’t know if I had room in my heart for another one.”
