Neuter and Spay, No More Strays

By Mandy Easter | Project Leader

Ilfov County Animal Bureau has joined forces with Animal Spay and Neuter International (and our sister charity Romania Animal Rescue) to provide outreach work around the county. This work includes spaying and neutering, vaccinations against diseases such as parvovirus, flea and worm treatments for pets and stray animals.

This is the first collaboration of its type with the local mayors from the villages and towns on board, to clear the streets humanely of stray dogs and cats. Spaying and neutering remains the most powerful way we can do that. Most municipalities round up the stray dogs placing them in the notorious public shelters without using any measures to reduce the animals on the streets. This just becomes a vicious cycle of suffering for the dogs, public shelter life is a worse fate than living on the streets.

The outreach work also provides a great opportunity to educate both adults and children. Handing out leaflets on the five points of animal care and teaching those who have often had no education let alone on how to treat their animals. Often dogs are leashed on chains in the garden or yard, leaving them open to the elements and their quality of life is poor with no stimulation. Much of this isn’t down to wanton cruelty, but education, a need to know “how” best to care for their beloved pets.

It is only by providing a holistic approach to animals needs that dogs and cats receive the care and treatment they deserve.
