Greetings Friends and Supporters,
I hope this report finds you well. We had an amazing April with volunteers meeting in Romania to help with both a mobile campaign and Center of Hope Spayathons.
A number of us, including a volunteer vet tech from the USA, traveled 4 hours from Bucharest to Filiasi to do another Spayathon for that town. Few vets are able to do surgeries there and the locals asked us please to return to do the excellent keyhole incisions Romania Animal Rescue is known for that require minimal recovery time.
I volunteered in recovery along with others. Dogs came from all over, some from owners, some from rescuers, some from shelters. Here is the process;
Dogs are brought in under appointment schedules. Local organizers check them in and give them a number. The dogs are put under anethesia, clipped, intubated, have a catheter installed in their front leg, and taken over to the surgery table. Here the potential incision area is sterilized by a vet tech and the dogs are placed for surgery. The veterinarian then places a sheet over the surgery site to keep the area sterile and begins the keyhole incision process to completely sterilize the female using spay hooks, or the male who does not require spay hooks. Injections of long term antibiotics, anesthesia top offs, and pain medication are given through the catheter. Upon completion of surgery, the dog is brought to a recovery area where there are blankets, hot water bottles, and monitored for their temperatures, breathing and color of their gums. This recovery period allows us to groom the dogs and remove parasites such as ticks (often found on the dogs). Often the owners come in to stroke their dogs and we advise them on animal care. We also supply deparasite products for those in need. Recovery generally takes 1-2 hours. Sometimes shelter or rescue animals get adopted during our Spayathons.
This is basically the same process as at our bases Center of Hope Bucharest and Family Vet Craiova, however with mobile tables and lamps that are brought to the campaign.
Following this 2 day Spayathon where 103 animals were spayed and neutered, we returned back to Center of Hope to provide more spays and neuters there.
A lot of work was done in our 10 day trip, and to think the wonderful Dream Team does this all the time! Amazing animal lovers who deserve the highest praise.
