Parents with special needs children who want to send them to school must have funds to pay for a carer to accompany the child to the school and attend to their needs throughtout the day. This is near impossible for many special needs parents who are unemployed or under employed and in many instances are single parent households.
Having a special needs child is financially intense in the sense that one needs special transportation, medicines, medical supply, clothing, foods, specialists, etc and all this cost quite a lot of money. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to afford a full time carer for school.
When special needs children are to be registered in the public schools systems they are required to invest a lot more both financially, emotionally and physically to educate their children.
Over the last eight months we have provided support to 3 special needs children who needed medical specialists for various issues and support for ear, eye and hearing test, and general evaluation to understanding their ability to process information and communicate.
Post COVID-19 has posed additional challenges for special needs families as they are expected to invest more even when everyone else are still complaining about reduced incomes and opportunities.
Let us continue to provide support to special needs families by encouraging and supporting them.
