Emancipation of the Girl Child Through Education

Dear friends,

We thank each of you for making the Sphoorti project possible and our efforts worthwhile. Your support has given us the confidence and motivation to reach out to more girls in need and distress.

The new academic year has just begun and children have started attending schools again. The last two and a half months have been very eventful at Sphoorti. All our children appeared for examinations. We are delighted to share with you that 10 out of 12 who appeared for STD X Board exams passed in all subjects. Two children were not able to clear one subject each.

The highest GPA was 9.0 followed by 8.5 and 8. Eight children scored over 7.0. These children are preparing to enter Junior College (equivalent of +2).

We have begun to collate details of all the 200 beneficiary children of this project. All of them have started attending school.

Here is a case study of one of the girl children. Her story will give an indication about the true situation in a lot of families which are below poverty line.

Anu Kumari was born to very poor parents from a village in Bihar. Her family shifted to Cherlapally in search of work and finally settled as daily wage laborers in a manufacturing firm. Anu is a first generation school goer from her family. Her parents and relativesare illiterate and

Anu started going to a local government school when she was 5 years old. After two years, her parents gave birth to a boy child. Anu stopped going to school as she was required to take care of her younger sibling while her parents went to work. Despite requests from the government school and other community members, Anu's parents did not relent.

This year, one of the local community members approached Sphoorti to help the child go to school.
