Dear friends,
First off, Sphoorti wishes you a very happy new year.
Our children signed off 2015 in style with a big celebration on Dec 31st 2015. Our children gave song and dance performances to welcome 2016.
We celebrated all important festivals like Christmas and Sankranthi with enthusiasm. We gave all of them new clothes as part of the celebrations.
This case study is about Sowmya who grew from a very diffident girl into a confident student.
Childhood can be a curse if the parents do not discharge their responsibilities properly. Sowmya is such example of a child with hardships right in the beginning of life. Her story is one of moving from trauma to happiness and hope in life. Her story holds a lot of life’s lessons.
Sowmya (11) hails from a locality near Ameerpet, Hyderabad. Her father Ravi was a compulsive drunkard. Her mother Renuka had to leave the house with her children because of continued domestic violence in 2009. Sowmya came to Sphoorti in 2010. She was born in March 2004. She is in STD VI now and is a very active girl. She plays skipping and badminton and likes reading books in the library.
When Sowmya joined Sphoorti, she had vitamin deficiency and her left eye had a serious problem. She comes from a dismembered family fraught with domestic violence which left some deep scars in her psyche.
It took us about 3-4 months to help her deal with all her physical, mental and emotional health issues. We took the help of staff members, school teacher and some volunteers to deal to sort them out.
Sowmya underwent eye operation in 2014 with the help of local Lions Club and now has clear vision. She is now able to concentrate on studies and other activities.
Sowmya wants to study science in future. She feels very comfortable and secure staying with Sphoorti inmates. She is slowly learning to speak in English.
As you can notice, Sowmya’s story is that of transformation of an impoverished illiterate child to a confident school going child.
The staff members have to be particularly commended for their commitment and hard work in dealing with children like Sowmya.
Though she is just in STD VI, she is mentally matured beyond her age.
Over the last several years, the collaboration of our donors, well-wishers and other stake-holders has helped us provide a safe and secure childhood with facilities on par with those of a middle class family.
There are several such stories at Sphoorti and through your support, we can create more success stories and gift able citizens to the world.
