ELIE & the Elephant Valley Projects (EVP) sponsor an elephant page is an ongoing funding program for the 12 elephants now at the EVP Sanctuary. Donors can sponsor one of our elephants as a monthly contribution or support them with a one off donation.
To give you a quick update on the 12 elephants at EVP, one of which you may be sponsoring, read on. Note individual elephant sponsors will also receive your specific elephant update directly from us at EVP.
Sambo
The past few months haven’t been as easy as some for our old Sambo girl. Sambo continues to need the most care, she has come down with a tooth infection and needed some extra care these past 2 months and watching her closely making sure she is eating. This is common for elephants in their 60’s and it might even fall out at some point. So at the moment all of your sponsor dollars help fund Sambo's massive food intake and daily foot treatments. She and Ruby meandered through the forests, searching for new fresh shoots as the rains continued in the past couple months and some scattered showers now as we come into the dry season.
Nung Bra (Ruby)
Ruby has been doing well these last few months, her normal routine has been munch munch munching on new bamboo shoots. She is still getting some small flare ups of her eye infection, but a week of eye drops calms it back down, along with some cream if needed. She continues to be Sambo’s rock and supports her on a daily basis, probably gossiping about all the goings on at the basecamp.
Gee Yul (Easy Rider)
We have brought Easy and GeeNowl closer to the waterfall for new grazing areas. Easy is doing well, smashing through the forest like a tank, as usual. A few fly bites and normal jungle wear and tear, but she is doing well.
GeeNowl
Together with Easy rider, GeeNowl has been brought up closer to the waterfall. She has been suffering from quite a few fly bites to her belly still, and had a tooth infection like Sambo, but GeeNowl’s has pretty much healed. She also has been getting a few more cuts than usual, probably from trying to be a tank like Easy. She wandered away one night in October and went on a long trek through the villages, eating her fill in a couple farms! One very expensive endeavor, but otherwise, she is doing ok.
Hen
Hen has been doing pretty good for him, hobbling around is his new normal. He has been having a bit of trouble with constant fly bites, we have moved him to an area without as many flies and he seems to be doing well. His dedicated mahouts are doing an amazing job caring for him each day, walking with him while he slowly through the forest and continuing his daily medication and treatments.
Gee Bloh (Doe)
Doe is doing fantastic as usual, no more running off with wild elephants. Her health is great and having a great time in her retirement here at EVP enjoying roaming through the forest everyday.
Bong Kong (Darling)
Darling is doing so well in her second year back here. With a constant full belly, she and Doe are a favorite of day visitors, who love to watch her scratch and mud after she gets out of the bath. The past few weeks she has been mudding herself quite a bit after her bath getting ready for that dry season coming along.
Ning Wan
Ning Wan is getting used to baby Diamond more, but she still will keep her distance when she can, as Diamond has a lot of energy that can be a bit overwhelming. She is still sticking close to Pearl and giving her support, but now from a small distance away, giving the baby some space. As we get into the colder part of the dry season we are keeping a close eye on Ning Wan, as it’s always harder for older elephants to keep their body warm during the cold nights. We are giving her some extra supplements at night to help keep her full and warm all throughout the night.
Mae Nang
Mae Nang is doing well, however the rainy season took a toll on the old lady, and this year we can really see her aging. She is now around 72-74 years old! We have updated her night time boost feed and hope she isn't too affected by this bit of cold we get in November and December. Thanks to her sponsors for helping to fund her extra care.
Gee Chreng
Gee Chreng is getting used to baby Diamond. She’s not doing too bad, just a small infection on a cut that we took care of very fast and she’s all good now! We moved Gee Chreng and the whole group to a new spot and a huge improvement in the mites they seemed to be having in their ears in less than a week.
Gee Pael (Pearl) & Gee Pech (Diamond)
Well what to say about these two, apart from they are the cutest little mumma and bubba team we have ever seen. Pearl is doing an amazing job as a mum and has calmed down from the bundle of energy she used to be before baby Diamond came along. Diamond is learning something new every week. Just this week she learnt how to rip up a small tree and whipped it all around her, like she sees her mumma doing to swat off flies. She is getting so strong!
Thankyou
We want to thank you all for HELPING US, HELP THEM. We are committed to providing a better life for the amazing retired and rescued elephants under our care, but we could not do this without you, so thank you all for your sponsorships and donations.
