Sponsor an IDP Child

Arts to End Genocide continues to grow our Sponsor a Child program to improve the lives of the children living in the Faladje Camp in Bamako, Mali.   We have a new group of sponsored children who are part of our Childhood Education program. These children are all enrolled in the public school and have been attending classes since October, 2023.

Prior to the start of the school year the principal of the public grade school near the Camp came and talked to the parents of children from ages 6-9. It was important for the parents to understand the importance of educating their children. 30 children were chosen to start this initial program.   The public school is not free. There were school fees to be paid, school supplies, birth certificates to be gotten, clean new clothes needed and backpacks for each child. The women that we had trained to sew were able to sew the clothes and backpacks.

We are so proud that all 30 children are still in school. This is unheard of among the IDP population where it is usual for children to drop out after a few weeks. We attribute this to having selected very motivated parents as well as children. They all have wonderful attendance and are passing. They have learned their alphabet and are beginning to read. Our goal is to see these children go into second grade next year as well as start a new group of children in the first grade next Fall.
