In Fundación DEHVI we continue working on innovative pedagogies that allow the integral development and learning of children from creativity, imagination and sensory experiences, this time through activities related to the project "surprising animals" which consists of children knowing wild animals, their habitat, their characteristics, their skills, their food and everything around them.
The interest and previous knowledge that children possess on this subject is impressive. Every day is a new adventure in the Children's Centers, as children investigate at home and ask generative questions within the classroom. For a few weeks, children have been invited to explore the outdoor spaces looking for wild animals.
Likewise, they were provided with materials to draw their favorite wild animal according to their possibilities of action, within this same activity they were asked to describe the animal they drew, the descriptions were very accurate and also very witty, such as, that of "Josh (4 years old) who told us about the hypotanus (hippopotamus) told us that the hypotano eats gallo pinto with cheese (typical Costa Rican dish) and that it is fonda (submerges) in the water." In addition, we made the footprints of some wild animals, where the infants painted them with temperas, using them as an environment for the classroom.
On the other hand, the sensory part has been worked with plasticine, gel with frost, water with dye, sand, striped chalk, cottons and natural resources. At the same time, we have tried to make the issue of wild animals also among the sensory. For example: wild animals were introduced to the water with dye and the infants had to take them out, mentioning their name. The sensory part is of utmost importance for the development of skills in infants, and they are activities that they like very much, allowing their concentration to improve.
Knowing about animals develops emotional benefits for children: empathy, affection, solidarity and care are some of them, and not only with animals, but also with nature and people.
We hope you have enjoyed this progress of learning of children in our Children's Centers, which through creative and fun activities can connect them with the world of animals.
Thank you for supporting us to continue providing quality care and innovative education to 630 children at social risk in Costa Rica.
“Thank you for being part of our work as an Ally for Children of Fundación DEHVI”
