“…practicing good hygiene habits leads to good health”

Chantrea was born on September 25th,2012. Now she is 12 years old and lives in Kdampuk Village, Preah Sdach district. Chantrea is studying in grade 6th at Kdampuk primary school. She has one older sister and one younger brother. She is the second child in the family. Now she lives with her old grandmother because her mother always moved to work in Phnom Penh as a garment worker to earn income to support Chantrea’s living and education.

Chantrea shared some challenges of her studies and the consequences of her health last time before she was selected for the School Development Program of Sunshine Cambodia Organization. In general, she did not understand the importance of health and hygiene to her life and life, and she always did not care and practice good personal hygiene habits in daily living, as well as washing her hands before eating food and after using toilets, cutting fingernails or toenail, taking a bath, brushing teeth, washing clothes and washing hair both at home and school, so her body and clothes look so dirty with bad smelling when she went to school every day. Her family also did have clean water to drink at home, and she always drank unsafe water such as rain and well water without boiling properly because her family did not have filters for drinking every day at home. So that’s why Chantrea mostly got sick with diarrhea and vomiting, and her family also spent a lot of time and money on buying medicine. As a result, she could not attend school regularly because of bad health and her study results also were not good.

However, everything changed a lot after she was selected for the school development program in July 2021. The program provides her and her family with hygiene materials such as toothbrushes, toothpastes, nail clippers, soaps and water filters, and we also provide study materials, especially food packages for her family. This support really encouraged and made her very happy, and it is also a good assistant in improving her health, hygiene, and family life. In addition, the program team not only provided these materials and support for her and the family, but we also conducted home/family and school visits with her and the family. During the visits, we always encouraged her to study hard both at school and at home, and we also shared with her and her old grandmother the importance of personal hygiene and good drinking, living and eating, because health is the most important part of our living and life. At school, we shared and taught her and all students personal hygiene, and the program also built a clean water system and a hand washing facility for all students to use at school.

Now Chantrea understands well the importance of hygiene and good drinking, eating and living. She also practices or applies it well in daily living, both at home and at school. She always washes her hands, cuts fingernails or toenails once per week, takes a bath, brushes her teeth, washes her clothes and hairs her hair regularly. In particular, she always drinks clean and safe water every day, both at home and every school, because now her family has water at every home and at school she has clean water to drink, so she just refills it any time. Now she stops drinking rain and well water anymore and her health is very good, and she goes to school regularly with good school results too. Chantrea also shared with a smiling face that “… I am so happy because now my family has a water filter and my school also has a clean water system, so I always drink clean and safe water every time. My health condition is also good if I compare it with the last time. Now I do not have diarrhea and vomiting as before, and I attend school regularly with good school results. Finally, I would like to say thank you so much to the program team and sponsors who support me and my family so far.”
