520 Children Deserve a Chance to Learn

By Elijah Osagie | Project Leader

Every Child Deserves the Chance to Attend School
Every Child Deserves the Chance to Attend School

Dear potential Donors and partners,

For millions of children across Nigeria, a new school term does not mean putting on a uniform, carrying a school bag and walking into a classroom.

For some, it means another term spent at home.

The reasons vary from one family to another. A parent may be unable to pay school fees or buy books and a uniform. Another family may have been displaced and lost its source of income. In communities affected by insecurity, children may have had their education interrupted for months or even years.

The numbers remain troubling. UNICEF reports that more than 10 million children in Nigeria are out of school in 2026. Conflict, displacement, poverty and attacks on schools continue to keep children away from learning.

Recent events also show how quickly a child's education can be interrupted. UNICEF reported that conflict and displacement have disrupted schooling for thousands of children in Sokoto State, while its 2025 year-end report recorded further disruption following attacks and student abductions in Kebbi and Niger States.

Our plan is to help 520 children from low-income and crisis-affected families return to school. Support will be based on each child's school needs and may cover school fees, uniforms, books, school bags, stationery and learning materials.

As funds are raised, our team will work directly with families and selected schools to identify children who are currently out of school because their families cannot afford the cost of their education. We will support enrolment from Primary 1–6, JSS 1–3 and SS 1–3 and follow up with the schools to know how the children are progressing.

There is reason to believe that financial support can make a difference. UNICEF reported that nearly 166,700 out-of-school children entered formal schools for the first time through programmes it supported in Nigeria during 2025. Cash assistance to 11,250 households in Borno and Zamfara also supported schooling opportunities for 25,000 children.

We sincerely thank our donors, partners, schools, volunteers and everyone supporting this project. We are still at the beginning, and there is much work ahead.

If this appeal speaks to you, please share the project on social media and with your friends, family and colleagues. You can also become an individual fundraiser on GlobalGiving and invite people in your own network to help sponsor children back to school.

A school uniform, a set of books or a paid school fee may seem ordinary. For a child who has been watching other children go to school each morning, it can mean finally joining them.

Thank you for giving children another chance to learn.

With gratitude,
Elijah
