In the year 2000, the country of Chile passed a law banning the sale and use of personal fireworks.
The incidence of childhood burns from fireworks has been drastically reduced in Chile since then, with only 6 such burns treated in 2017-18.
COANIQUEM sponsored that law and celebrates the results.
They now campaign for other countries and cities to follow the same path. The campaign is also sponsored by Chile's Ministry of Foreign Relations and the Ministry of Health.
In August 2018, leaders of COANIQUEM traveled from Chile and from California and Washington DC to present a workshop at the UN Conference " Finding Global Solutions for Global Problems." The conference was attended by Non-Governmental Oganizations from throughout the world. COANIQUEM's story was told, and representatives from other countries were encouraged to institute similar measures to stop the incidence of childhood burns from fireworks.
The campaign continues! Enjoy the celebrations of public fireworks displays.
But save the children from painful and traumatic accidents caused by "back-yard" displays!
Alto al Fuego! (Stop the Fireworks!)
Your contributions help COANIQUEM to continue its treatment of burned children - and its outreach to PREVENT childhood burns.
