Project Report | Dec 12, 2023
Packard Foundation Grant

By Robert L Cowan | Treasurer, Coaniquem BCF

Among the best news we had this quarter was the announcement that we had been approved for a grant from This. grant (2023-75875) has been awarded to Coaniquem Burn Center Aid for Children Foundation for Latin America Burn Registry Project for a grant amount of $257,000 over 24 months. We have received all of the money and the work is just starting.

For 25 years Coaniquem BCF has been changing the lives of  burned children in Latin and south America. These children have to overcome enormous medical, mental and social obstacles to thrive! Coaniquem does just that! At this time, we have helped more than 14000 children live life to the fullest! So to celebrate we had a 25th Anniversary Celebration fundraiser…the Fiesta Afloat. We charged $135 per passenger and sailed San Francisco Bay on the Hornblower Empress for several hours in gorgeous weather and enjoyed wine and a catered lunch. Beside renewing post-Covid friendships and having a wonderful time we raised over $4,000. Dr. Jorge Rojas, the founder of Coaniquem, his lovely Maria Esther and the new Director of International Affairs, Alan Mackern, were able to attend.

During their visit, Mr. Mackern and Dr. Rojas were able to meet together with the Consul Generals of about 7 Latin countries to strategize the training and treatment of health care professions in their countries utilizing the expertise of Coaniquem. This effort is just beginning but the outcome looks promising.

We are also continuing our successful efforts to secure contributions from select Rotary Clubs in the US.
