By Carolyn Schuetz | Dir./Treas, COANIQUEM Burned Children Foundation
Maite lives in Southern Chile. She was 15 months old when she placed her hands on a heater and got severe burn injuries. She traveled to the COANIQUEM center in Santiago for her treatments.
With the advent of a telelmedicine system in 2017, COANIQUEM can now monitor and instruct for treatments in their three centers: Santiago, Puerto Montt, Antofagasta. Maite could have been seen at the Puerto Montt center, with the experts in Santiago examining her wounds with a 50X magnification. The doctors in Puerto Montt would have been guided through the appropriate surgery and treatments.
The system was purchased with a grant sponsored by Rotary Clubs in California and Santiago.
The telemedicine enhancement reduces the costs and the trauma to chilren needing to travel for treatment.
Welcome to the brave new world of medicine! COANIQUEM continues to welcome new technologies and to bring improved techniques for the burned children.
We welcome your contributions to help us continue the progress.
