Online Silent Auction Fundraiser

Dear Supporters,

All of us at EEESMA head into the new school year (2021/2022) with optimism and hope for a bright and better future. We fully realize that the financial road ahead will be challenging but we are rolling up our sleeves and putting our shoulders to the wheel, committed to continue to expand and develop this valued and much needed school for kids; kids determined to achieve independence despite being Deaf.

We have several campaigns/activities planned over the next 12 months aimed at raising further awareness of the school's services to deaf children, as well as recognizing and inspiring our current supporters. Also, and very importantly, to create new fundraising activities and opportunities.

Our next major activity will be an upcoming Online Silent Auction and Wine Pull scheduled for September 23rd - October 1st, 2021.

The Auction is presenting 65 wonderful items including inviting destination packages, incredible paintings and art pieces, many by well-known artists, exquisite jewelry, an assortment of gift baskets, local tours and adventures, and much much more.....also a fabulous Wine Pull.

Hope Springs Eternal

Dia de los Maestros

After over a year of holding classes virtually, Spring holds the promise of re-opening to in-person learning at EEESMA. A target date of May 31st has been set. Teachers and staff received their shots against Covid-19 in early May and are feeling excited and confident to return together. On May 17th, Dia de los Maestros (Teachers Day) gave students and board members the opportunity to celebrate the amazing things EEEMSA teachers have accomplished despite the pandemic. Flowers for the ladies, chocolates for Diego and "Felicidades!" to each and every one of our wonderful teachers!

As a typically energetic and curious six-year-old, Jacobo attends primary school at EEESMA and is learning Mexican sign language for the first time in his young life. Jacobo and his family live in a rural community about an hour bus ride from school. When classes resume, he will rise at 6am with his mother and younger hearing sister to arrive at school at 8am, but he doesn’t mind because his eagerness to learn translates to a love of school. During his first few years, prior to Covid, integration to school was understandably a challenge for Jacobo because of his inability to communicate his needs. Learning sign language has changed that. He is now better able to participate in social activities, even online, and it will be a happy day for Jacobo when he can finally be back at school.

It is with great pride we announce two young deaf women, Fernanda and Juanita, have successfully transitioned from the Vocational Training programs at school to a fulltime employment opportunity! May 11th was Fernanda’s and Juanita’s first day on the job at Fiaga, a retail clothing store which operates its own sewing workshop. Working together as a team, the young women will support each other as they face the challenges of employment in the hearing world, something very new and strange to them. The students continue to learn that deafness does not preclude them from pursuing their dreams and will certainly not hold them back. Please join us in wishing them success!

On-Line High School Classes Begin

We are excited to let you know that this project is very close to being fully funded!

We are only $831 from reaching the goal of $30,000.

Thank you to all our generous supporters who have made this success possible.

We happily share with you the latest on what is happening at EEESMA.

Noelia, Angelica and Jesús have been accepted to on-line high school classes offered by the Secretary for Education of Guanajuato. In fact, their entrance qualification tests were in the +80% range. Please join us in congratulating all three!

And congratulations to Diego, who is himself Deaf, for the exceptional tutelage he has provided to the high school group. Diego tutored the first group of EEESMA high school graduates in 2019 and has returned to assist the new group. You will see by their smiles, they are happy to be back to school; in-person part-time. (Protective masks and shields were removed only for the photos.)

The younger students haven't been able to attend in-person classes since March 2020 and will have to wait a little longer.

Teachers and students have come to recognize over the past year that virtual classes, although often very challenging, do have benefits; offering flexibility, structure and the sharpening of digital skills. Blended learning has been incorporated and the very important social connection has been maintained. Although many miss the support that in-person classes offer, some have benefitted immensely from dedicated one-on-one sign language instruction. Video is perfectly suited to communicating in sign language.

New opportunities for providing specialized instruction and psychological services, across many miles from different cities within Mexico, are now coming into sharp focus. Please stay tuned.
