Expanding the Mann Deshi Champions Programme
While the Champions program has supported 4000 athletes so far, only a few hundred go on to become professional sportspeople. All our athletes come from very poor, rural and SC/ST farming backgrounds. As in most part of our country, once most girls complete their high school degree, they are expected to be married. The Champions program tries to break this cycle.
The Mann Deshi Champions sports program has supported a number of athletes to compete in tournaments, become professional athletes and earn a decent livelihood while also keeping their love for sports alive.
This project seeks funding to continue supporting young athletes. The following areas of support are required.
a. Improving the quality of local coaches: India suffers from the lack of highly skilled coaches in primary schools. The Mann Deshi Champions both supports alumni enroll in the high-quality coaching training programs as well as runs up-skilling workshops for existing coaches.
As part of this initiative, every year, Mann Deshi Champions sends athletes to train at the National Institute of Sports in Delhi to become certified coaches. Moreover, twice a year, 50 local government school coaches from Solapur, Satara, Sangali and Kolhapur district participate in training workshops organized by the Champions programs. The training is given by the Sprinters Club Coaches of Mumbai and covers several topics including basic sports training, nutrition awareness and gender equality. These coaches reach over 5000 athletes.
b. Financially supporting those athletes and alumni who want to enter sports related professions.
The Champions program is dedicated to supporting its athletes – especially young girls – explore sports as a career. These young women start earning an income for the very first time, often become the primary breadwinners in their families and have more say and control over their lives and choices. They also become role models in their villages.
We have tied up with several training programs in Mumbai and Delhi for a variety of diploma and short-stay courses. Moreover, Satara district has the highest number of recruits in law- enforcement. This is because a job as a police officer pays extremely well, especially when compared to the average farming income. Mann Deshi supports young athletes to pass the required physical and written tests. Again, there is a special emphasis on supporting young girls.
While so far 65 athletes have been supported in the next three years, the Champions program hopes to support 1000 athletes find employment. We aim to
Provide financial support for 150 female athletes to get a sports education diploma and find employment in the sports industry
Provide 900 athletes with employment in the law-enforcement industry Provide professional national-level training to over 900 highly skilled athletes
