In collaboration with Georgetown University in Washington DC, we conducted a first-of-its-kind Mental Health and Strength Workshop for Sports Coaches and athletes. The sports programme works to provide rural girls with access to play sports and excel in them. Unfortunately, in rural India, there is a lack of awareness regarding what mental health is and how to address identify and approach it.
This intervention included a 4-day intensive workshop for coaches. The workshop trained coaches on the stressors that athletes face and how to understand them better. It also included a 7-day workshop for athletes aged 13 to 25 years.
Vaishnavi, a national-level medalist in running, stated that the workshop has helped her understand herself better and the techniques of visualisation and progressive muscle relaxation will significantly help her to mentally prepare herself for competition day.
