Donors what a year it has been! First there was a spike in the number of Covid 19 cases, followed by the eruption of the volcano, La Soufriere, then an another spike of Covid 19.
And yet we persist. We continue to make plans and focus on our mission, even though we are hanging by a thread.
In August through the middle of September there was a span of time where it looked as though regular life would return. We gathered ourselves and offered our annual visual arts program to children in the Kingstown area, at the Youlou Art Centre and in Spring Village, a rural location.
Initially the programme was planned for 2 weeks but was extended by popular demand for 4 weeks. The parents were desperate. Schools had not reopened since December, 2021.
At the Spring Village location there was a blend of art making activities and formal academic work.
The focus was to encourage the children to look within themselves and discover their own super powers. The program titled " I Super Duper - Heroes Editon" had activities which included discussions on the volcano combined with book making and sculpture.
The children were introduced to poems by the late "Shake Keane" a local jazz musician and poet.
The Teachers Art Show opened on the heels of the closing of the children's program, on September 11. All local art teachers were encouraged to take part in the show. By the time we had the opening reception, the Covid 19 cases started to rise, needless to say, the reception was poorly attended..
Yet we continue to move forward with our work inspite of the circumstances.
We believe bringing the arts to the children and community is the thing to do.
Donors please continue supporting us.
