The Struggle To Offer Art Classes

The Youlou Art Centre is first and formost an educational institution, dedicated to nurturing and encouraging the arts in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
At the start of 2023 the Centre decided to offer a variety of art classes to the public. We decided to focus on offering a life drawing class. This proved to be a very ambitious undertaking, since life/figure drawing classes are a rare offering on the island. To get the project started, the Centre had to find a suitable instructor and buy easels. Getting easels proved to be the easy part, finding a suitable instructor was a daunting task, it took 4 months to find a capable instructor. It was a huge accomplishment.
After many months of planning and advertising we were able to start an art class for adults during the month of May.
It was a difficult, tough time trying to get these classes going. But I am happy to report we persevered and got the job done.
Currently we have turned our attention to organizing the 2023 annual visual arts programme, titled "Growing Young SVG Artists", offered to children ages 5 to 12. The focus this year is on Climate Change, a carryover from last year. It will be the first time the programme will be offered in several locations other than Kingstown, since the pandemic. This year for the first time ever the programme will be held in 5 locations - Georgetown, Tourama, Buccament, Spring Village and Kingstown. It's a huge undertaking.
The programme will start with a three day Teacher's Workshop, starting July 12 to July 14. The children's programme will start July 17th and end July 28th.
Preparations have started. The necessary art supplies have already been sent to St. Vincent.  Art activities are being planned.
In my next report I will report on the activities we have planned for this year.

Donors we are counting on you to support this project. The aim is to have a fun and successful programme.
In the meantime keep supporting us!
