Dear supporters,
As mentioned in our previous update at the end of 2023, we have been considering ways in which we can increase the outreach of our diversity and inclusion workshops. In February, we brought a workshop to Kikuyo Town, Kumamoto, this time taking a slightly different approach.
This workshop focused on a "story time with discussion" setting, using books which address the issue of discrimination within society. Reading books is a wonderful way to discuss diversity with children, as the children are less likely to become overwhelmed by the topic, and the visual aids are especially useful. During our story time, we read "We're Different. We're The Same" which explains how every human has different characteristics on the outside, but they all function the same way.
The children (aged between 7 and 15) shared how they experienced these similarities and differences in their daily lives. It was a fantastic opportunity to see older children support the younger children by sharing experiences relating to discrimination that the younger children may not have yet experienced yet themselves.
Many children, especially in more rural areas in Japan, do not have the opportunity to meet children who are from a different racial background. Kikuyo Town recently became the location for one of TSMC's (one of the world's largest chipmakers) new factories. As such, in the past two years, more children from Taiwan and other countries have began entering into the school system, and will continue to do so as more companies flock to Kumamoto.
The discussions in our workshop not only allowed children to discuss differences between their peers, but also that even if physical appearances are similar, each child has different needs, desires or feelings. In that sense, I have no doubt that diversity & inclusion workshops are more crucial than ever, especially in areas with expanding international communities like Kumamoto.
As always, we appreciate your continued support, and are very much looking forward to updating you in the upcoming months!
