Making a stand
Making a stand

Thank you so much for your support which keeps us going when times are tough. You may have heard about the recent attack on a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata. She was raped and murdered while at work sparking a national outcry with protests and strikes and increased coverage of other gender-based violence in India.

Despite Snehalaya and others working to end gender-based violence and empower women and children (which we have been doing since 1989), the issues and incidents continue. Therefore, on 24 August, Snehalaya joined the national outcry around the horrific incidents of sexual violence against women.

A powerful gathering of Ahmednagar social organizations and citizens took part in a unified rally, drawing attention to the urgent need for justice and protection of women and children. As an organisation that provides refuge to survivors of sexual and otehr gender-based violence, our employees include those wha have been appointed district-level experts in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. They were among Snehalaya's representatives in the crowd passionately demanding strict enforcement of the laws and immediate punishment of perpetrators of such heinous crimes. Their call for the empowerment of women through comprehensive training programs highlighted the essential tools needed to combat the systemic issues that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women.

The turnout from socially conscious citizens of all ages, united in solidarity for the cause, demonstrates the gender-based violence has no place in a civilised society. Participants held posters expressing their indignation and calls for justice, amplifying the message that society will not tolerate such atrocities any longer. The banners bore slogans and messages demanding not only justice for the victims but also a commitment from authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of women and children.

The rally was not just a response to specific incidents but was symbolic of a larger struggle against the pervasive culture of violence that many women endure daily. It underscored the importance of collective action in the fight against injustice, reminding everyone present that change is only possible when voices are united.

As we navigate these challenging times, the message of the rally is clear: we must work together to create a future where women can live free from the threat of violence and your support is crucial in empowering us to do so. Safety, justice, and the empowerment of all individuals are not just ideals; they are the rights that every person deserves. This rally was a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that our society is a safe haven for all, especially the most vulnerable.

Together, we are stronger in the fight against injustice. Together, we stand "United for Justice." Let's keep the momentum going, reinforcing our commitment to change, and ensuring that no one faces violence in silence. The work is far from over, but the unity displayed at the rally and your support for this cause and helping us to keep our women's refuge and helpline operating gives hope for a brighter and safer future for all.
I sincerely thank you for standing with us.
