Over the past few months, the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team has been cracking down on the illegal wildlife trade in Kampong Thom Province with significant results from recent raids. Kampong Thom is in the center of Cambodia, lying astride national Highway 6, which is a major artery for wildlife trafficking from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and then up to the Thai border, and Highway 62, which runs north to Preah Vihear Province. Collaboration with local informants was key to these recent operations – and the generous donations of GlobalGiving donors like you helps to pay informants for reliable information that leads to a successful bust.
On February 8, 2022, following an investigation done in collaboration with our informants, the team raided the house of a wildlife trader in the Sandan area of Kampong Thom. During the raid the team confiscated many live animals, including: 17 Elongated Tortoises – an IUCN Red-Listed Critically Endangered species, 13 Long-tailed Macaques, 7 Asian Leaf Turtles, 5 Common Palm Civets, 3 Rat snakes and 3 Water snakes, 1 Malayan Snail-eating Turtle, and 1 live Monocellate Cobra. In addition, they seized 10 dead Lesser Whistling Ducks, 3 dead Lesser Mouse Deer, 50 Burmese Python skins, 7 carapces and plastrons of Elongated Tortoises, and 1 Sambar Deer Antler.
The live animals were released in their natural habitat, while dead animals and parts were burned at the local Forestry Administration (FA) station. The trader is to be fined $7,170 USD, an extremely high fine for Cambodia, based on three times the market price of the wildlife seized. On the day of the bust, the trader said that she was willing to pay the fine, but she has not done so yet. Legally, she still has a week or so to pay up, and if she does not the case will be sent to the provincial court.
Another major operation conducted in Sandan by the WRRT in late December 2021 yielded very large quantities of wild meat, dead animals and snares. In this case, informant information led to an undercover field investigation and a WRRT raid of 3 neighboring houses. The traders were openly selling wildlife parts and meat in front of their house. The team confiscated: 365 lbs. of Wild Boar meat, 28 lbs. of Porcupine meat, 8 dead Mouse Deer, 15 dead Slow Lorises, 16 Porcupine stomachs, 1 live Elongated Tortoise, 1 motorbike, and 160 snares. Three offenders were fined, of which only 1 accepted to pay $1,098.75 USD. The two other cases (with fines totaling over $3,000 USD) were sent to court. The owner of the snares signed a non-re-offence contract. All meat and dead wildlife were destroyed at the local FA station, and the 1 live tortoise was brought to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre.
Thank you so much for supporting our work to investigate, crack down on the illegal wildlife, and ensure offenders face consequences that hopefully will deter them from trading in wild animals’ lives again in the future.
