A final update from the WRRT

After many years fundraising for the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT), we have reached our goal and therefore will be closing this page. We want to thank you deeply for all your support of the WRRT over the last few years, it’s because of you we have been able to rescue so many animals, stop illegal wildlife trades and protect Cambodia’s wildlife.

Some of the highlights since 2020, when we first started fundraising on GlobalGiving, have been:

  • In 2021, we rescued a total of seven leopard cats. In early March, a foreigner living in Rattanakiri Province in Northeast Cambodia called the Hotline to report that he had convinced a local villager to pass our team two baby leopard cats. A few days later the team was called to collect another pair of leopard cat kittens found abandoned near a forest fire in neighboring Mondulkiri Province by a Phnom Penh resident who rescued them while he was on holiday there.
  • In 2022, a Wildlife Alliance staff member passed on a report of a pileated gibbon being illegally kept in Phnom Penh. During the team’s inspection, the gibbon’s owner explained that he had raised it since it was a baby. In such cases, people often did not know it was illegal to keep any native wild animal as a pet in Cambodia. After the team educated the owner about wildlife protection laws, he agreed to donate the gibbon in order to avoid any legal penalties and it was taken to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC)
  • In 2023, the team rescued a young gibbon being kept in Kandal Province. As is too often the case, the owner offered to donate the primate only once it was sick. The team brought the gibbon to the clinic of Wildlife Alliance’s veterinarian in Phnom Penh for specialized care.
  • In 2024, our team received reports from informants that a police raid on a Chinese restaurant which led to the arrest of the owner had revealed a live tiger living in a box in the restaurant. The team negotiated with the restaurant managers to donate the tiger to Phnom Tamao, where it would be rehabilitated and cared for. Today the tiger, named Roy, is thriving at PTWRC and enjoying his new found freedom.

We could not have done all of this without your support! Thank you again. You can continue to keep up to date with Wildlife Alliance via our newsletter.
