Stop killing baboons – Report March 2024

The need to provide better protection and welfare for baboons continues to be our driving motivation and to this end I am pleased to report that we have had successful meetings with a variety of primate groups, including an encouraging meeting with Dr Jane Goodall on her recent South African visit.

I am very concerned about the looming deadline of December 2024 at which time the City of Cape Town plans to withdraw its rangers from all currently managed troops leaving those baboons without any sort of oversight and management; it will be extremely challenging without rangers and unless the partnership of the City of Cape Town, SANparks, Table Mountain National Park and Cape Nature successfully and immediately implement their strategic management plan, it will be chaotic for residents with the inevitable result being a further escalation of baboon deaths and injuries.

We are continuing to advocate to the authorities and decision makers and hope that our voice of reason is heard and acted upon.  We have also prepared legal documents and intend to pursue this route in coming weeks.

Our team working with CT2 continues to do exceptional work and have kept that troop safely on the mountainside for nearly a month now – despite the obvious lure of grapes in the vineyards.  Our work illustrates that solutions are available and that if everyone works cohesively we can provide workable solutions to reduce conflict.

I hope that with your support we can continue to provide the voice of proactive reason and solutions for the baboons and that good sense prevails.
