Summary

Many widows in rural Nigeria are forced into unsafe practices and face sexual abuse after their husbands die. Some are asked to sleep with relatives, shave their heads, or stay indoors for months. Most of them cannot read or write, and they have no one to turn to for help. This project will reach 300 widows. We will hold group talks in their local languages, speak with community leaders, and link abused women to help. The goal is to reduce these harmful acts.

Challenge

Widows in rural Nigeria often face abuse, shame, and unsafe treatment. Some are forced into sex or harmful customs like drinking bath water from their husband's corpse. Many are scared to speak out or do not know where to go. Most cannot read or write, and they feel alone. No one explains their rights to them in ways they can understand. People around them often believe these acts are normal.

Solution

We will visit villages and meet widows in small groups. All sessions will be done in local languages. We will use stories, pictures, and simple messages to help widows know what is safe and what is not. We will train some widows to help others. We will also invite village heads and elders to take part in these talks so they can hear how these harmful acts affect women and help stop them.

Long-Term Impact

Widows will know they are not alone and that abuse is not normal. They will be able to speak up and find help when needed. Trained peer widows will remain in the villages and keep helping others. Local leaders will become more careful about the way widows are treated. With time, fewer widows will face these harmful practices, and more will feel safe and respected.
