Across Uganda, hundreds of thousands of women are living with HIV. Without the proper support, HIV positive mothers will give birth to HIV positive babies, making an AIDS-free Uganda an impossibility. This project will help Alive Medical Services, a medical centre in one of Kampala's poorest neighborhoods, support women and children with free HIV treatment. By donating, you will have an impact not only on the lives of our patients, but on the lives of families and communities as a whole.
In 2016, 4,600 babies in Uganda were born HIV positive. Every week, 570 adolescent girls contract the virus. And throughout the country, rates of HIV among women far surpass rates among men. Supporting HIV positive women and children is key to ending the epidemic in Uganda, and to do so, we must make comprehensive health care, counselling, and education programs accessible to women and children of all ages.
This project will help AMS continue supporting newborns, children, adolescents, and women affected by HIV. By providing antenatal care services to HIV positive women, we will ensure babies are born HIV negative. By engaging girls and boys in our youth programming, we will build self-confidence and sustain adherence. And by following up with each of our female clients to assess their health needs, we will contribute to the overall decrease of HIV infections around Uganda.
In recent years, the rates of HIV infection in Uganda have greatly decreased. To truly eliminate HIV's devastating impact, however, we need to focus on those most affected. Your donation will help HIV positive women and children live long, healthy lives, not only by increasing access to lifesaving health care, but by empowering patients through livelihoods groups and peer support programs. By supporting women and children, together, we will curb infection rates for generations to come.
