Dear Friend,
Your unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation has played a crucial role in protecting the Amur Falcons of Tamenglong, Manipur. Thanks to your support, we continue our mission to safeguard these migratory birds and preserve the rich biodiversity of the region.
The Landscape & Importance of Conservation
Tamenglong District, covering 4,391 square kilometers, is home to over 90% of Manipur’s forest cover, making it a critical hub of biodiversity within the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot. The region's lush tropical rainforests and bamboo brakes provide refuge to many endangered species, including the Great Indian Hornbill, Hoolock Gibbon, Slow Loris, Chinese Pangolin, and the migratory Amur Falcon. Each year, thousands of these falcons arrive in October and November, feeding on termites before continuing their long journey to Africa.
Despite its ecological significance, Tamenglong faces increasing threats due to deforestation, habitat destruction, and illegal hunting. Recognizing the urgency of conservation, the Rainforest Club Tamenglong (RCT) has been leading efforts to protect wildlife and raise awareness about the need for conservation.
Addressing Threats to Amur Falcons
Historically, the local Zeliangrong community revered the Amur Falcons, incorporating them into folklore and traditions. However, with the introduction of modern hunting methods in the 1990s, mass hunting became widespread, with reports of up to 400 hunters at a single roosting site. Birds were openly sold in markets, and the lack of resources and harsh terrain made enforcement difficult. While intervention by the Forest Department and conservation groups reduced hunting, a resurgence occurred in 2022, highlighting the need for a structured response through the Rapid Action Project (RAP).
RAP: A Multi-Pronged Conservation Strategy
Thanks to your generous support, the RAP implemented in 2022, 2023 and 2024 has led to significant conservation achievements, including:
Strengthening Law Enforcement & Community Engagement: Collaborating with the Forest Department, District Administration, Police, and Village Councils to implement official hunting bans and voluntary surrender of air guns.
Patrolling & Monitoring Roosting Sites: Deploying village volunteers and flying squads to monitor hunting activities, report violations, and assist in population surveys.
Satellite Tagging & Research: Working with experts from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) to satellite-tag two falcons—Chiuluan II and Gwangram—to track migration patterns.
Amur Falcon Festival & Community Awareness: Organizing the Amur Falcon Dance Festival as a platform for conservation dialogue and community participation. Traditional dances and folk songs celebrating the falcons foster cultural ownership of conservation efforts.
Student Outreach & Education: Conducting awareness programs for over 1,500 students, inspiring them to take a pledge to protect Amur Falcons and their habitats.
Looking Ahead
The progress made in protecting Amur Falcons would not have been possible without your belief in our mission. Your support enables us to continue conservation efforts, educate communities, and ensure these remarkable birds return to Tamenglong year after year.
Together, we are making a lasting impact on wildlife conservation. Thank you for being a vital part of this journey.
With gratitude,
Wildlfe Trust of India
