There’s a quiet revolution under way in 12 government schools of rural Rajasthan. This year, 249 school girls in financial need most from families teetering on the edge of poverty got necessary educational support as a reminder of a basic element: girl dreams are worth the investment. For these girls, a shortage of basic school supplies frequently marks the beginning of sporadic attendance and eventually drop out.
Each girl received a carefully assembled education kit, which redressed not just classrooms for access to learning but dignity and confidence. “When a girl walks into a classroom ready armed with bag, notebooks, pencils and learning materials she walks taller. She participates freely. She believes she belongs. The 12 schools’ teachers report that girls demonstrated renewed vigor, more engagement in their classes and gained better attendance in the classrooms, immediately once support was made available .
Besides this direct support, followed by an awareness and inspiration meeting for the girls (on importance of education in personal development to family prosperity and what valuable role towards nation building). The girls were encouraged to dream big for themselves as future teachers, leaders and role models who could lift not only their families but also their communities. Many in the crowd listened with shining eyes as they were told, maybe for the first time, “Your education has the ability to bring up pride and progress and change.”
One such student, Meena (Name Changed), 14, told RSKS Team softly: “I want to become a teacher so girls like me don’t have to leave school.” Her listeners understood the fuller meaning of this initiative. To reinforce accountability and to inform future programs, RSKS gathered random feedback from students and families as well, so that the voices of community members continue to guide RSKS work.
