Sudan Emergency Fund

Thank you for your generous contribution to the Sudan Emergency Fund. Your donations continue to make a difference, ensuring Sudanese have access to food, urgent medical care, psychological counseling, and relocation support for those arriving at the borders of neighboring countries like Chad and South Sudan.

Since April 2023, more than 7.5 million Sudanese have been forcibly displaced within and across the country’s borders, making it one of the world’s largest displacement crises. Devastatingly, it is expected that 24.8 million people in Sudan—approximately half the population—will need humanitarian assistance in 2024, including to stave off famine for thousands at risk.

Within this context and since our last update, donations from the Sudan Emergency Fund have supported five grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis. Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

• Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA Network) is a grassroots feminist network that provides support to vulnerable individuals and communities, including activists and young women across Sudan, helping with their relocation and offering emergency aid items and assistance following instances of sexual and gender-based violence. SIHA’s decades-long history of working in Sudan and with the Sudanese diaspora has enabled the organization to identify innovative solutions, advocate on critical issues, and provide life-saving support.

• Sagadaat-USA is a Sudanese diaspora-led organization continuing to meet the needs of innocent Sudanese caught in this conflict. The organization is providing food to at-risk communities in besieged Khartoum via community kitchens, as well as leading projects in five camps for internally displaced Sudanese. These projects include activities like distributing food, building shelters, and other ad hoc services. 

• Nile Care Advocacy for Peace and Development (NILECAPD) is a South Sudanese organization that has been providing Sudanese refugees and South Sudanese returnees—particularly women, children, and the elderly—with transportation from border crossings to more permanent locations, as well as plastic sheets, buckets, blankets, mosquito nets, pit latrines, and cooking supplies. Whenever possible, NILECAPD offers hot meals like porridge for malnourished children, as many arrive hungry. With over 450,000 refugees and returnees arriving in South Sudan since April 2023, urgent assistance is still needed daily to meet the needs of those coming into the country. 

• ONG Sahkal is a Chadian organization providing Sudanese refugees with critical supplies such as detergent, water, soap, and food, as well as services for survivors of gender-based violence. ONG Sahkal’s efforts aim to help reduce tensions, resource scarcity, and heightened needs of both host and refugee communities. 

• People's Initiative Development Organization (PIDO) is a South Sudanese humanitarian organization responding to increased humanitarian needs in South Sudan, exacerbated by the war in Sudan. PIDO, alongside a consortium of local organizations, is conducting needs assessments, and will be distributing food aid, supporting family reunifications, registering individuals to receive services, and coordinating with other actors.
