In September, we shared with you the story of the Fakulteta Summer START Academy, which took place for the seventh year in a row. This time, we’ll share with you the story of the inaugural Summer START Academy in Burgas, which took place from July 10th to July 30th, 2023.
Forty students from the "Vasil Levski" Elementary School in the "Gorno Ezerovo" neighborhood took part in the summer activities. The children who are at risk of dropping out of school received additional support in two key academic disciplines – Bulgarian language and mathematics, along with targeted development of essential skills.
The success of the academy was attributed to the teachers’ various approaches, including regular progress tracking, tandem teaching by two dedicated instructors, group work, establishing personal connections with the children, and the involvement of volunteers. Volunteers included students from specialized high schools in Burgas and a university student majoring in "Early and Preschool Education."
Five guest lecturers met with the children throughout the summer academy to inspire them: Gergana Stoyanova, Filka Kostadinova, Veselina Raycheva, Magdalena Vangelova, and Galya Dryanova. The women shared stories not only of their captivating journeys to various countries but also of the path from the small neighborhood to their dream profession. Notably, three guests were Roma community members, helping the children connect better to their experiences.
The culmination of the academy was marked by an excursion to the Aviation Museum in "Sarafovo."
