An Update from Esperanza Urbana - October 2023

Hello and welcome to our October 2023 update.

First and foremost we would like to profusely thank our wonderful group of volunteers who, weeks after weeks, diligently and enthusiastically go out on the street to distribute food, clothing but more importantly genuine human warmth and smiles all around. Their dedication and commitment to Esperanza Urbana's cause and by extension the people living on the streets is impressive and so admirable. Their number keep growing (a 100 +) and we can count on average on 15 people to show up for the cause every week. You will see them in action in the photos included.

In other news, we have been meeting with Cummins, one of our main sponsors, to discuss further ways in which they could help EU with its mission. To that end, they are funding a project to benefit the rehabilitation center and the men that have finished the program. A container will be purchased and transformed into proper individual rooms so that the men that have found jobs after the rehab but still need to remain in the center can get a proper night of sleep. We will keep you updated as this project unfolds. In addition, their wonderful employees have collected loads of clothing and donations and have provided food and drinks for our Wednesday outreach.

Another project dear to our mission is the renovation of the rehabilitation center. Renovations are required to bring up to code and make it safe and practical for the people living and working there. That has been an objective of EU for a very long time, but funding is challenging in this economic environment. If you or someone you know (whether individual or corporations) want to help, please reach out to me directly at davidc@esperanzaurbana.org.

You may not have heard in a while about the migrants in South America but for us, it is a daily reality. We see many migrants on the street in San José and their stories are heart-wrenching. Eu tries to help as many of them as possible via our outreach program by providing them with food and warm clothing and sometimes also just by lending an ear and listening to their stories of despair but of hope as well. One such stories belong to a father and son duo, Osvaldo and Ronaldo, Venezuelans on their way to the US. They were helped along by our volunteers, and we are happy to report that they have been made it in the US, have been sponsored and are doing well. We wish them well on this next part of their journey.

Lastly, we would like to finish by thanking you for your interest in Esperanza Urbana and your unwavering support.

Sincerely,

David
