Dear Friends,
Priyagayathri’s journey reflects the reality for many young people we serve. After her father left when she was just seven, her family faced years of instability: losing their home, financial hardship, and eventually her mother having to work overseas to support them.
Today, Priyagayathri lives alone while continuing her education, determined to build a better future. After attending a Tea Leaf Trust session at her school, she decided to join our programme. She now travels over an hour each day to attend classes, often arriving tired but never discouraged. She shares, “Tea Leaf is not just a place to learn English; it is a place that teaches you to believe in yourself, to make the right choices, and to dream bigger than your difficulties.” Her story mirrors many of our students who are navigating separation, uncertainty, and economic pressure.
This year, 471 students enrolled in our one-year Main Diploma, alongside 42 trainee teachers. This impact grew thanks to the opening of our newest centre at Amba Estate, extending access to education for young people in another underserved tea estate community. Students began with our Intensive English Programme, building foundational language, confidence, and essential life skills. Alongside their studies, all six centres completed community service projects, serving more than 40,000 people through initiatives such as cleaning hospitals, schools, and public spaces. A medical officer shared how students' efforts have “significantly improved the environment, contributing to the well-being and morale of patients and healthcare workers. It is heartening to see your institution fostering such a strong sense of civic duty and environmental stewardship in the youth of Maskeliya."
However, this progress comes amid increasing uncertainty. The ongoing crisis in the Middle East is having a direct impact on Sri Lankan families, many of whom rely on relatives working overseas for income. As jobs become unstable and remittances are disrupted, households are facing sudden financial shortfalls. For our students, this often means difficulty affording daily transport or even meals, placing their education at risk. We have already supported 100 students with bus fares and food to ensure they can continue attending classes.
Despite these challenges, we are seeing a remarkable transformation. Students who once struggled with fear and isolation are beginning to find their voice. One student, Vinodani, arrived on her first day unable to speak or engage. Today, she leads her peers in talent show rehearsals, encouraging others to step beyond their comfort zones. She explains, “When I enter the Tea Leaf Centre, I forget my problems… I feel freedom to study.” In the face of uncertainty, these young people are not only continuing their education but also growing in confidence, resilience, and hope.
Thank you for standing with them. Your support is helping ensure that even in times of crisis, their futures remain full of possibility.
