Imani House Inc. continues to do all it can to break the cycle of generational poverty in Monrovia, Liberia. We are currently adult literacy students of varying learning levels by offering free adult literacy evening classes.
In Liberia, the adult literacy rate remains under 50 percent. For our students, learning to read, write, and calculate is a direct pathway out of poverty. Currently, half of Liberia's population relies on subsistence farming and petty marketing to survive. Acquiring foundational literacy and numeracy skills empowers our students to transition from low-yield subsistence activities to profitable, sustainable business enterprises. This shifts their life outcomes and strengthens the economic resilience of their entire families.
One of our students, Kula, shared: "My big thanks to the people of Imani House and supporters of literacy for opening doors for those of us that are in darkness. To our friends out there we tell them it is never too late to learn. When I started this class two years ago, I could not even recite my ABC’s. Now I can try with reading and also the best of all is to write my own name.” Many of our students are able to open a bank account. Before this time, they were at the mercy of local money savings groups who often swindled market women and men out of their savings.
Learning allows our students to master new skills and advance their market work, or any other work, which in turn benefits the entire community. By fostering a resilient mindset, our programs help students lift themselves out of systemic poverty. The skills built in our classrooms ripple outward. When a marketeer learns arithmetic, their business grows, their children stay in school, and the local economy thrives.
We are deeply grateful to our GlobalGiving donors for continuing to support adult literacy in Liberia.
