Women with Alzheimer's Face Isolation Without Care

By Joy O. Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I am writing to share a difficult situation regarding our project to support elderly women with Alzheimer's in rural Nigeria. We have not yet received any donations to begin this vital work, leaving these vulnerable women without the care they desperately need.

Currently, elderly women suffering from memory loss in rural villages remain isolated and misunderstood. Many are called "mad" or "bewitched" by their own communities, leaving them to face hunger, confusion, and danger alone. Without proper care, these women wander unsupervised, forget to eat, and live in conditions that threaten their health and dignity.

Our project is designed to change this reality. We have identified communities where trained volunteers could provide regular care, including help with bathing, meals, and medication. We have prepared simple training materials for families and located suppliers for basic care supplies. However, without funding, we cannot begin this work.

The need grows more urgent each day. Without intervention, these women will continue to live in neglect, their conditions worsening without diagnosis or support. Their families struggle without guidance, and their communities lack the understanding needed to provide compassionate care.

We are asking for your help to begin this important work. Your support can provide a care package for a woman who has been forgotten, train a volunteer to offer comfort, and help a family understand how to care for their loved one.
These elderly women deserve to live their final years with joy, not alone in confusion.

With hope and respect,
Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
