In Nigeria's rural villages, elderly women living with Alzheimer's face daily neglect, hunger, and confusion, with no structured care or caregiver training. This project will provide care, meals, and support for 1,520 women through trained volunteers, regular check-ins, and community-based health aides. Immediate support is needed to reduce isolation, manage symptoms, and help caregivers cope.
Most elderly rural women with Alzheimer's in Nigeria are left untreated or misdiagnosed. They are often seen as burdens or even stigmatized as "mad" or "bewitched." Without support, they lack food, hygiene, safety, and care. Families are not trained to manage memory loss or related behaviors, leaving women vulnerable to neglect and poor living conditions.
The project will train local volunteers, provide home-based care, and offer food and basic supplies. Volunteers will visit each woman, help her bathe, take medications, and stay oriented. We will also support family caregivers with basic training. This will create a safety net where none exists and help women live with more comfort and dignity.
By establishing a local care structure, this project will reduce neglect and abuse of elderly women with Alzheimer's. Community volunteers will continue providing support after the project cycle ends. Families will better understand how to care for their relatives, reducing stigma and helping more women live with peace and safety in their own homes.
