CAMP IMANI: OUR EXCITING SUMMER SO FAR

By Bisi Ideraabdullah | Executive Director

Greetings Team Imani!

Many thanks are in order. We greatly appreciate your continued contributions and support. Imani House, Inc.continues our mission of supporting low-income, inner city youth and their families. Here’s what we’ve gotten into so far, this summer, at our award-winning Summer Rising program:

  • New Location/New Opportunities: Holding Camp Imani at a new location (PS9) this year added a need for some adjustments but Imani House has prevailed once more as we close in on the halfway mark of Summer Rising.

Summer Rising is free and available to all NYC students in grades K-5. We received around 563 applications for 150 openings.

Our free summer camp takes place Monday-Friday from 8AM-6PM. Morning schedules consist of Academic Programming, and after lunch, Camp Imani collects our campers for a fun and informative afternoon.  Camp Imani builds team spirit, ensures that principles such as gratitude, empathy, sportsmanship and environmental care are promoted.

  • Population, Camp Imani provides enriching summer programming to a unique and diverse group of students.  The majority of our attendees are of Black/African American and Latino descent.  We also assist campers with special needs.
  • Trips [And Special Events]  Are Crucial To Our Summer Program, Trips grant children the opportunity to explore the world around them under care and supervision, as well as encourage social-emotional development, and participation.
  • So Far This Summer, Camp Imani took a group of 100 children to NYC’s Museum of Modern Art where they were guided on tours to learn about art mastery and beauty.  This excursion was followed up by the creation of their own masterpieces.
  • A VideoGame Truck engaged students in collective gaming, an activity that they’ve expressed interest in since last year
  • This week: OnFriday, Camp Imani will have our fun Bouncy House Festival where we provide water slides, an inflatable obstacle course, popcorn, fruit, and other healthy snacks and beverages
  • Next week: There will bea trip to our local Prospect Park’s Splash Pad, weather permitting, for water games and outside activities
  • For Our Last Weeks: We’ll take a bus trip from Brooklyn to Manhattan for Bowling; Grades K, 1 & 2 will go to Chuck E Cheese for physical games and interactive fun and Grades 3, 4 & 5 will go to Dave & Buster’s
  • Programming/Specialty Programs, Along with recreation and learning this summer, we continue to offer our specialty programs that encourage children’s creativity, social skills, and overall participation.  Throughout, they are able to engage in:
  • DANCE
  • AFRICAN DRUMMING
  • ARCHERY
  • STEEL PAN BAND
  • ARTS & CRAFTS

We have heard great reports from our specialists, and we see such improvement in students' dedication to practicing and having fun with these art forms. We take pride in what we are able to offer families

  • Camp Imani also has 2 new programs that offer Environmental Awareness, as it is imperative that campers learn about their global impact. This Summer’s focus has been on climate change, and “Oceans In Motion,” an exciting new project has begun.  “Oceans In Motion” will consist of: a podcast, that encourages students to collaborate and make their voices heard, as well as a stage presentation
  • Our Literacy Tutoring Program is ongoing. Children struggling with their reading receive help from our trained tutors.

We look forward to your next contribution; as you can see it really makes a difference.  Because of our efforts,  Imani House ensures that children have a memorable summer vacation full of fun and enrichment.  The quality is undeniable.  Once again, we thank you for joining our cause.

THANK YOU
