Summer Camp Imani 2016 has been quite a memorable experience for each of our enrolled students (at PS 150 and PS 282)-This is what we want and continue to hope for. Our goal in hosting annual summer camps is to provide structured recreational activities that engage and challenge our children cognitively, intellectually and physically. The 7-week summer camps were launched at both sites on July 7th and ends on August 19th. Offering an enriching milieu of the arts and outdoor activities such as African Drumming, Archery, Chess ,Drama, Athletics, Dance and so much more; our goal is to make these activities accessible to children who, in their regular daily lives will not engage in, for various reasons that most often are rooted in poverty an dysfunctional family systems. Additionally without Summer Camp Imani, most of these children would be at home during their entire school vacation, unengaged, idle and possibly roaming the streets.
Learning to play chess is one of the “intellectual adventures” provided and Archery is another that provides both cognitive and athletic skills development. One of our students remarked “I love chess I never knew it would be so much fun -Taj” And we continue to get great raves from both our children participants and parents of which many are very engaged and supportive. During the 2016 summer camp season, we also served at full capacity, which is a testament of our strong impact and ability to correct or redirect the courses of these young lives.
The fruit of our results continue to blossom as we see students transform week after week, becoming more engaged in learning new skills, improve in articulating themselves, gain self-confidence and report of having fun as they learn.
Your support of our work is tremendously appreciated because you enable us to provide and sustain these educational, engaging and memorable opportunities that build a foundation for lifetime success.
Do look for our next report that will provide more highlights of student trips, sports, activities as well as their personal feedback about Summer Imani 2016!
