Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest types of cancer worldwide. In Switzerland, around 1,700 people are diagnosed with the disease each year. Despite modern treatments, however, only around 15% survive the first five years after diagnosis. The tumor often goes undetected for a long time, grows aggressively and is difficult to treat, which is why it is all the more important to explore new avenues in research.
An innovative research project led by Dr Anna Silvia Wenning is investigating ways to improve the prognosis for patients at high risk of complications after surgery. The aim is to determine whether complete removal of the pancreas leads to better long-term results than the current standard procedure. The study focuses not only on survival, but also on quality of life, chances of recovery, and patient safety.
