Project Report | Jul 8, 2016
How you support new therapies

By Peggy Janich | Scientific Associate

To take advantage of our body’s inherent capability to attack and fight tumor cells, a basic understanding of the crosstalk between tumor cells and immune cells is necessary.

In response to this year’s first call for research projects, the Swiss Cancer Research foundation received 45 high-quality basic and clinical cancer research projects. One third of these research projects specifically focuses on tumor immunology and aims to identify new targets for intervention or improve current cancer immunotherapies.

Among these projects are novel drug-development approaches that utilize a variety of immunomodulatory agents, such as antibodies, bi-specific molecules, peptides and cell-based therapies. The potential of these novel agents will be investigated in pre-clinical models of multiple cancer types, including leukemia, brain tumors, melanoma and others. Results obtained in these studies may lay the groundwork for future clinical trials.

All these research projects reflect the breadth of opportunities immunotherapies offer in the treatment of cancer. However, as in the past, several authoritative research projects could not be realized due to insufficient financial resources. In the interest of patients and their loved ones, we therefore hope we can rely on your continued support to advance cancer research even faster. Thank you.
