Empowering Adolescent Girls through Home-Based Goat Farming

PROTIBANDHI SHISHU SHIKKHA O PARICHARJA SAMITY (PROSHIPS) Program Focus on Increasing Women’s Livelihood Opportunities through Inclusive Home-Based Goat Farming at Jamalpur district ,Northern Part of Bangladesh , It is river basin areas of Jamuna river in Bahadurabad Union under Jamalpur district.
As part of its commitment to promoting livelihood opportunities for marginalized and vulnerable communities,

Kahinnur (Unknown) is adolescent girl with Mild level Intellectually disabilities live with her mother at Dalbari village at Dewangonj Powrashava under Dewangonj upailla zilla district Jamalpur Bangladesh. She is live with hard core poverty. Father died very early hood. They are always fighting for running their family. Mother works in others as a house worker.

PROSHIPS initiated a home-based goat farming program for women & adolescent girls with disabilities and girls from low-income families. , As part of its commitment to promoting livelihood opportunities for marginalized and vulnerable communities. Through this initiative, PROSHIPS provided goat kids to selected adolescent girls and trained them in basic livestock management, feeding practices, shelter improvement, and disease prevention. The goal was to help young girls build their own small-scale, sustainable income stream within their homes. The program aimed to enhance economic resilience, increase nutritional security, and promote women’s empowerment at the household level.

Through this initiative, PROSHIPS provided goat kids to selected adolescent girls and trained them in basic livestock management, feeding practices, shelter improvement, and disease prevention. The goal was to help young girls build their own small-scale, sustainable income stream within their homes.

 Within one year of receiving the goat kids, the girls demonstrated remarkable commitment and skills in rearing and managing their goats. With proper care and guidance from PROSHIPS field staff , The goat kids matured successfully, They reproduced, rapidly increasing the number of goats in each household , Families developed small but profitable goat farms, Girls gained confidence and recognition within their families and communities. The improved livestock assets have now turned into a growing household resource, contributing both to income and food security. Her family now considers her a contributing member, and her confidence to dream of a better future has grown significantly. Adolescent girl proudly says, “Before, I had nothing of my own. Now these goats give me hope. I want to expand my small farm and become independent.”

The goat-rearing initiative by PROSHIPS has proven to be a transformative livelihood program for adolescent girls. What began as a small support package has now grown into a sustainable economic pathway that strengthens household resilience, enhances self-reliance, and advances women’s empowerment.
