2.1 Completion of the Microfinance Program for Women/Parents
During the reporting period, Learning Squared Liberia completed the final phase of its FY25 Microfinance Program, targeting women and parents from the Ann Sandell Independent School in the Police Academy Community, Paynesville, Liberia.
The program’s goal was to support 10 parents, particularly women, who face financial barriers to sustaining their children’s education. It also served as a continuation of support for women who had participated in previous program cycles. A total of 10 women received two days of training focused on financial literacy, bookkeeping, group management, women’s rights, and leadership development. The program strengthened participants’ entrepreneurial capacity and enhanced their financial literacy to improve household income and educational support for their children. Out of the 10 participants, eight (8) women successfully commenced the loan cycle, while two (2) could not continue due to relocation. The training covered business management, profit generation, and enterprise expansion skills, enabling participants to manage and grow their small-scale businesses. Each participant received one hundred and thirty dollars, $135.00 US, as a seed fund to expand their business. Participants utilized microloans to expand businesses such as local food sales and petty trading. Many women reported an improved ability to meet school-related expenses and reinvest profits into their enterprises, reinforcing the program’s goal of economic empowerment through financial inclusion.
Participant Testimonials
“Before joining the group, I could hardly keep my daughter in school. Now I sell cooked food and save money every week. I no longer depend on my husband alone.”
— Lorpu K., Group Member
“Through the microloan, I bought tailoring materials and started sewing uniforms. This helped me pay my children’s fees on time.”
— Kebeh G., Group Member
2.3 Support 25 Students for FY26
As part of Learning Squared Liberia’s continued commitment to improving access to education, the organization identified and finalized plans to support 25 students under its FY26 Scholarship and Education Support Initiative.
The beneficiaries, primarily children of participants in the microfinance program, will be selected based on financial need, academic performance, and parent participation in VSLA activities. Each student will receive educational materials, including notebooks, textbooks, pens, pencils, and other essential learning supplies.
The goal is to ensure that the financial empowerment of parents directly contributes to the school retention and academic success of their children, thereby linking economic inclusion with educational outcomes.
