Ou lo9cal partner, NISD was successful in delivering the project outcomes effectively, enabling more schools to improve their ranking to reach grade A, the highest rating in school performance and quality of education as determined by the Indian Education Act. Now 30 out of the 36 schools in the project area are in grade A.
The project was also successful in supporting more women and men in increasing their income through vocational training , access to jobs and the setting up of small businesses; as well as in instilling new and better hygienic practices among the school children and the wider community.
However, what I believe remains the project's biggest success is that it galvanised the local communities to acquire a strong sense of ownership of the project and to take more responsibility of their well being and that of their children, families and communities. Most of the schools’ performance, attendance and completion rates continue to improve thanks in great part to the involvement of parents and the local community, both financially and otherwise. This year alone, the total local contribution to the schools amounted to Rs 28,61,750 (approx £32000) , a strong testimony to the successful efforts of our partner to change people’s attitudes towards the education of their children and highlighting the importance of their role in effecting positive sustainable change.
