By Christopher Adjah | Project Leader

Introduction

Adjah Cancer Support Ghana (ACSG) is committed to supporting children with cancer and their families. Our Pediatric Cancer Support Program aims to provide comprehensive care, emotional support, and financial assistance to children battling cancer. This report outlines the key activities, outcomes, and future directions of the program.

Program Objectives

  1. Provide Medical Support: Ensure children receive necessary medical treatment and medications.
  2. Offer Emotional Support: Provide psychological counseling and emotional support to children and their families.
  3. Financial Assistance: Help families cover the cost of treatment, transportation, and other related expenses.
  4. Raise Awareness: Increase public awareness about pediatric cancer and its impact on families.

Activities Conducted

  1. Medical Treatment Support: Partnered with hospitals to facilitate treatment for 100 children, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy.
  2. Counseling Sessions: Conducted 50 group and individual counseling sessions for children and their families, reaching over 200 participants.
  3. Financial Aid: Provided financial assistance to 75 families, helping cover medical bills, transportation, and accommodation near treatment centers.
  4. Awareness Campaigns: Organized 10 awareness events in schools and communities, distributing educational materials on pediatric cancer.

Outcomes

  1. Improved Treatment Access: 100 children received timely and effective medical treatment.
  2. Enhanced Emotional Well-being: Counseling sessions significantly improved the emotional well-being of children and their families, as indicated by follow-up assessments.
  3. Financial Relief: Financial assistance reduced the economic burden on 75 families, enabling them to focus on their child's recovery.
  4. Increased Awareness: Awareness campaigns reached over 5,000 people, enhancing public understanding of pediatric cancer and the importance of early detection and support.

Challenges

  1. Resource Limitations: Limited funding restricted the number of families we could assist.
  2. Access to Treatment Centers: Some children in remote areas faced difficulties accessing treatment centers due to poor infrastructure.
  3. Cultural Stigmas: Cultural stigmas surrounding cancer created additional barriers for affected families.

Future Directions

  1. Expand Medical Partnerships: Collaborate with more hospitals to increase treatment access.
  2. Increase Funding: Launch fundraising campaigns to secure additional resources for financial assistance.
  3. Enhanced Outreach: Strengthen outreach efforts to reach more remote areas and provide necessary support.
  4. Cultural Sensitivity Programs: Implement programs to address cultural stigmas and educate communities about pediatric cancer.
