A Butterfly's Journey: Hsiao-Chen's Resilience

By Marie-Claude Pelchat | Project Leader

When Hsiao-Chen was born, her legs were covered in purple and blue birthmarks above her knees, and her delicate little face seemed to have a beautiful butterfly with purple and blue wings. Like many parents confronted to their newborn child’s birthmarks, they initially thought that the birthmarks would gradually fade with age, but instead, they became more and more pronounced. This unique appearance often made Hsiao-Chen the center of attention, attracting curious inquiries from others.

Hsiao-Chen had always been a lively and cheerful child, but her personality became more reserved after starting elementary school. Concerned that she might be picked on or even bullied by her classmates, her mother decided to seek treatment for Hsiao-Chen and was surprised to discover that she had a non-fading condition known as Nevus of Ota.

With the financial support of Sunshine Foundation, Hsiao-Chen began laser treatment last year. After five sessions, the birthmarks on her face gradually improved. Fortunately, Hsiao-Chen did not experience any other complications, but the pain she endured during the treatments was heartbreaking. Her mother shared, "You could hear her screams from outside the clinic, and she even mentioned smelling the scent of burning flesh." Despite the pain, Hsiao-Chen, with her strong will, managed to endure the treatment by chatting with the medical staff to distract herself.

Despite the pain, Hsiao-Chen will continue her treatment. Hsiao-Chen's mother stated, "Sunshine social workers often come to check on us, providing practical support such as subsidies for laser treatment and scholarships. This alleviates the economic pressure on us, allowing Hsiao-Chen to undergo treatment regularly."

Hsiao-Chen's story reflects the story of many Sunshine children who, due to congenital diseases or burn accidents, undergo continuous surgeries, rehabilitation, and psychological counseling throughout their childhood. Despite the staggering pain, their bravery remains unbroken.

Sunshine Foundation invites you to join hands with us and accompany these children on their journey, so that they can grow happily. As 2023 comes to an end, we thank you for your support of Hsiao-Chen and the many children like her. We also hope that you will think of us during your end-of-the-year giving and donate so that children like Hsiao-Chen can continue to receive crucial services and support.
