A Little Boss with a Big Heart

By Marie-Claude Pelchat | Project Leader

“Can I bring my daughter to the fundraising event on Sunday? She just had a laser treatment on Tuesday, and her face is still bruised. It should be fine, right?”

Late at night, Yuchen’s mother sent us this message.

She quickly followed with another:
“Our whole family of three can come help with the charity sale!”

That’s how Yuchen became our “Little Boss for a Day.”

When Yuchen’s mother saw Sunshine’s Facebook post about the charity sale, she immediately wanted to join. Of course, our answer was yes—but deep down, we hesitated. The weather was unpredictable, the street would be noisy and crowded, and standing for long hours would be exhausting for both mother and daughter. We worried it might be too much for Yuchen, who had just gone through another painful round of treatment.

But when they arrived, all our worries disappeared.

On that busy street, little Yuchen stood proudly at our booth. She was full of energy, calling out to passersby with excitement, introducing handmade items, collecting payments, and giving change—without missing a step. Her speed and enthusiasm amazed us. Soon, our staff found themselves teaming up with her in a lively rhythm of calls and laughter, and perhaps because of this joy, more and more people came to support Sunshine’s handmade crafts created by burn survivors.

Her mother smiled and whispered to us:
“I want her to know that earning money is not easy, but also that she can give back in her own way. Most importantly, I want her to see that having bruises or marks on her face is nothing to be ashamed of.”

In the crowd, Yuchen was unfazed. Perhaps she still wishes her birthmark would one day disappear, so she could walk freely without stares. Like many children, she sometimes dreams of being a princess without scars. But she has already endured painful treatments and the hurt of bullying, and each time she has grown stronger.

That day, standing as Sunshine’s “Little Boss,” she shone with confidence. Later, she even went back to school and proudly shared her experience of helping at the charity sale.

Together with her mother, we believe that one day Yuchen will no longer feel “different.” Instead, she will reshape and redefine the labels society has placed on her, and deeply believe this truth:

“Our value has never been determined by how we look, but by the kind of person we choose to be.”

Thank you for standing with children like Yuchen.
With your support, Sunshine can continue to provide medical care, counseling, and empowering experiences that help children with facial differences face the world with strength and confidence. Every gift you give helps turn fear into courage, and pain into hope.
